Some of them have tooth or mouth problems that interfere with their ability to eat. The elderly may be tacking multiple medications that can cause changes in their appetite. Economic hardship and social isolation (due to migration of children or death of spouse) may also affect their nutritional habit.

POSITIVE AGEING: Challenge your negativity

Negativity is also termed as pessimism. It is a way of approaching the world with pessimism. A person with negative attitude towards life assumes that whatever happens is somehow, will take away one’s well-being, peace of mind or life satisfaction. Negativity relates not only about the future but also how one appraises the past and present. In other words it is an individual’s biased and selective belief structure that influences his perception of peoples, situations and even his life events, (past, present and future events).Negativity in old age, like rigidity, is maladaptive style of life. Negativity leads to distress when such a person remembers about his past. The negative person’s ability to be affirmative about life-events, persons etc., diminishes. It is a serious barrier to positive ageing. It is true that a person can’t be 100 per cent positive or negative.  But a person who is primarily negative about himself or herself, his or her   rational approach towards people and situations is lost. Negativity creates false fear and impotence. Person starts thinking that nothing can be done to change the situation.

“Mr. R.P., 62yrs of age, just retired from government job, had problem throughout his life had problems, big or small, due to his negative approach. He did not have happy married life and was frequently transferred from one place to another. Had very few friends, some of his very close friends and relatives advised him to overcome his negative approach and advised him to see good part of things. He always replied to them that he does not know what the good things are.”  Mr. R.P. used to see things with pessimism. One’s someone develops such attitude then it influences all the aspects of life.

What is correct age to start using anti-aging cream?

What is the correct age of using any wrinkle or anti-aging cream? My sister is of 25 and some body (her friend) told that now she should start to use anti-aging cream to prevent looking older, well i suggested her to remain natural and instead of going for creams etc. she should use natural products, exercise and drink water.I would think that the vast majority of people would want to get rid of those fine lines and wrinkles and would like to turn the clock back about 10 years. The older we get, the more we strive to perfect a “fountain of youth” product, which allows us to find a younger looking skin. But with all those thousands of products out there, it’s hard to know which anti-aging skin care creams work and which do not.

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy

What is Oxygen therapy?

Doctors say that "Oxygen is essential for cell metabolism, and in turn, tissue oxygenation is essential for all normal human physiology functions."

Our body needs more and more oxygen to generate energy from the food we eat. Our lungs deliver oxygen taken by us to our blood. If there is any shortage in flow of oxygen inside our body, we can feel short of breath. This chronic low oxygen condition that we all have causes our cellular oxygen levels to drop so our blood becomes more and more polluted. Dirty blood sets the stage for all the diseases.

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is a different kind of oxygen therapy which uses oxygen at high pressure to treat wounds and serious infections helps in curing anti-aging. High blood and tissue levels of oxygen useful or harmful, as the case may be used, and oxygen to the patient the benefit of increasing the supply of oxygen to the lungs and thus the availability of oxygen to the tissues, especially when the patient is suffering from tissue hypoxia, and / or hypoxemia.

Retirement: Health Promotion and Disease Prevention

A retire person is required to engage in the following activities to improve his/her health
  • Activities which are essential for complete prevention of the occurrence of disease ( Primary prevention) Example : immunization against pneumonia or influenza
  • Early detection and management of disease ( Secondary prevention)
  • Manage clinical diseases in order to prevent them from progressing or to avoid complications of this disease ( Tertiary prevention)
Multiple chronic illnesses are common in the elderly, and cure is often an unrealistic and inappropriate goal. In other words, in old age diseases are not curable, they are manageable. These chronic illnesses lead to disability and dependency. Therefore, a moor focus of health promotion efforts for the elderly should be on the minimization of loss of independence associated with illness and functional decline.
As has been emphasized early that elderly should be particular about the following areas :

    c) No tobacco use ( If you are using tobacco in any form, leave immediately)
    d) Be attentive about your safety ( be careful about falling)
    e) Immunization ( immunization for elderly is not popular in India)

RIGIDITY : Barrier to Positive Ageing

“Mr. Srivastava,72 years of age, a retired bank manager, whose wife died 15 years back, lives alone in a big house. His two sons and a daughter live in different cities. They come to meet him at in turn, regularly. Mr. Srivastave fell ill and was diagnosed cancer by doctors. Doctors advised him to go to Mumbai for treatment. He was asked if he takes proper treatment at this stage his cancer may be cured. His children wanted to admit in a good cancer hospital in Mumbai, but he refused to be admitted in the hospital. He will not listen any body’s suggestions and does not want to leave his house. He had a typical view about his illness and treatment. Due to the stubborn avoidance of doctors by Mr. Srivastava his children were unable to force their father to regular medical checkups and proper medical care.”

This is an example of rigidity. Rigidity is a world view inconsistent with healthy adaptation. It is a major barrier to good mental health. Rigidity is a form of resistance to change, even when there is clear evidence that change will improve wellbeing or lead to healthier functioning. Rigidity can be problematic in coping. It limits one’s ability to see problem from different perspectives. Rigidity fosters repeating the same mistake again.

Retirement: Role Changes / Transitions

Retirement is perhaps one of the most common role changes faced by the ageing. This is an occurrence that either can be planned for and anticipated, may be sudden and unexpected related to illness or injury, or may present along some continuum between the two. Some people find a lack of purpose whereas others feel a new sense of personal freedom and time for activities postponed during busier years. Some people become busy in some kind of social work around them. Persons who retire unwillingly, may be at greater risk for unsuccessful adjustment—including alcoholism, depression, and suicide.

The major transitions after retirement are : Health transition, loss of spouse, role reversal etc. These factors influence independence in later life or life after retirement. Health , personality, state of mind and emotional, physical and spiritual support all have a place in the adjustments one makes to the ageing process.

Although self care and health promotion are indeed important in maintaining independence, ageing and accompanying health factors often make this a very difficult period of life. High functional ability is not absolutely necessary for high quality of life.

—many older people can maintain health through social, intellectual and cultural activities.

ADVICE OF DELANY SISTERS ( contd.)

“Don’t depend too much on any one person. If you have a lot of helpers, you can be sure that someone will always be available when you need it. You will feel a lot more independent. We have different folks who do different things for us- like give us a ride, go to post office, or by vitamins. By spreading out these little favors, we are not a big burden on anyone.”

Sadie and Bessie Delany

“Never lose your sense of humor. The happiest people are the ones who are able to laugh at themselves.”

Sadie and Bessie Delany

ON SOCIALIZATION

“For true happiness, you‘ve got to have companionship----other people---in your life. It doesn’t have to be a husband or wife. It can be a friend or, like us, a sister

Sadie Delany

By now, we’ve outlived just about everyone we used to know, so many of our friends are much younger than we are. That doesn’t matter as long as you care about the same things and, just as important, if you have the same sense of humor. And you know what? Younger people can teach you a lot. They can keep you up to date. So we’ll take ‘home folks’ wherever we find them!”  Sadie Delany

“----I cherish most ---the family traditions, all those little rituals that bind you together, that keep you close---they think it doesn’t matter. Well, they’re wrong! --- It was comforting and it was fun.”

Bessie Delany
