Elderly Population occurs when the median age of a country or region rises. This happens because increasing life expectancy and declining birth rates. The aging of the Elders in the world - in developing countries and developed countries - is an indicator of improving global health. The global population of people 60 and older has doubled since 1980 and is expected to reach 2 billion by 2050.

  • Ageing of population is an end product of demographic transition.
  • The number of elderly people in developing countries is almost 3-4 times of that of developed countries.
  • The poverty rate for older Elderly Persons is more than double the national rate.
  • The developed countries have already experienced the consequences of this transition.
  • By 2050 the world will have almost 400 million people aged 80 years or older. Never before have the majority of middle-aged adults had living parents.
  • Creating “age-friendly” physical and social environments can have a big impact on improving the active participation and independence of older people.
